No i couldn't sleep with a fella i was mates with first, its akward, my last boyfriend was me mate first, and it didnt work out for various reasons, but thank god we still are good friends, i can imagine in certain situations that this isnt the case and not only have you lost a potential b/f you have also lost a mate too, so in answer to your question my answer is no
