I have been a single mother of three and they have total respect for others. In public, 1st offense, we visited the restroom for a talking to as to explain why they should not do what they just did or say what they just said. 2nd offense, visited the restroom again for a couple of open handed swats on the bottom and a reason why they got them. most times, there was not a 3rd offense. If so, I left my cart in the store and took them home. When they asked for what I had to leave in the store, whether it was a toy or food, I told them they were the reason it had to be left behind. As for the tantrums, my daughter was the worse. Most times I would tell her "Well it was nice knowing you. I hope the next family will love you as much as I do." I walk down the aisle or just out of sight and she would stop and come running!! If they said something that was not to be said, I would use a slight flick of my wrist to the lips. (not the face or even the jaw or mouth). My dad used to do that with me.(the flick thing to the lips) I told them the same thing he told me... "If you don't want it smacked back in, then watch what you say and it won't have to be." Since I started when they were under age of 5, their teenage years have not been so bad. My youngest has a temper and we go at it sometimes, but for the most part, he knows I will take him down if need be! This mom sometimes has to be the dad too! They know I love them. I will never abandon them. I will always be their teacher. I hope they will pass along good values. I do not agree to people who shop with a tired child along. If a child is already crying, then why would you cause more pain for them to cry more. Pick your battles. If the child puts things in the cart and you don't want them there, leave them. When at the register, set them aside and politely ask the cashier to have them returned to the shelves. Take stock tho!!!! What they pick up is a good idea for birthday and christmas gifts later!!!! The rod is not to be a physical thing. Their minds need disipline also. Train them with patience for they will need it when you get old and senile!!
